The most outrageous Ferrari you’ll never be able to afford is coming to Monaco

Someone once said that green is not a racing colour. That person was clearly wrong, and this LaFerrari is the proof.

Let’s get something straight from the outset. The Ferrari LaFerrari is not a subtle car. It makes 950 horsepower. It looks like it was sketched by someone who’d had far too much espresso and access to a wind tunnel. It is, in every meaningful sense of the word, completely unhinged — and Ferrari only made 499 of them.

So naturally, when Jamiroquai frontman Jay Kay ordered his, he decided that red, black, silver, white and yellow were all far too boring. Instead, he reached into Ferrari’s Extra-Campionario special order catalogue and pulled out Signal Green. Vibrant. Vivid. Utterly magnificent. It is, as far as anyone can tell, the only LaFerrari on the planet wearing this colour from the factory. One of 499 already-rare hypercars, made even rarer by the man in the enormous hat saying “yes, but make it green.”

To be fair, he had a point. At Goodwood in 2014, days after taking delivery, Kay threaded his screaming green monster up the hill and declared that he wanted to make a statement, that the colour deserved it, that it was his version of the Italian flag. And you know what? He wasn’t wrong. A red LaFerrari is spectacular. A green one is an event.

Inside, the theme continues with green and black leather, contrast stitching, and, because subtlety was never really on the options list “Jamiroquai” etched into the steering wheel. The car also attended the Enzo Ferrari Museum in Modena. Twice. Because of course it did.

Now, with just 12,042 kilometres on the clock, the kind of mileage most people put on a hatchback in a year, this extraordinary machine is heading to RM Sotheby’s Monaco sale on 25 April with an estimate of €4,000,000 to €4,500,000. That’s somewhere between a lot and an extraordinary amount of money for a car you’ll spend most of your time being too terrified to drive.

But then again, it’s a Signal Green, one-of-one, Jay Kay’s LaFerrari. Some things in life are simply worth it.
