Mercedes-AMG is recalling the majority of its exclusive AMG One hypercars after German authorities identified a fire risk linked to a potential hydraulic system fault. The recall affects 219 out of the 275 AMG One cars produced worldwide, making it one of the most significant safety actions ever for a production hypercar.
The issue concerns the active rear spoiler’s hydraulic line, where a crucial pin lock may be missing. Without it, hydraulic fluid could leak onto hot components, increasing the risk of fire. Mercedes-AMG says affected vehicles will require inspection to check for the missing part, with the fix expected to take around 90 minutes.
High-Stakes Recall for F1-Powered Hypercar
The Mercedes-AMG One, powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged hybrid V6 derived from Lewis Hamilton’s Formula 1 car, has been a headache for the manufacturer since its inception. The project was first revealed as a concept in 2017, with production delayed until 2022. Even Mercedes’ CEO joked that approving the project must have been a decision made “drunk,” given the monumental task of making a Formula 1 engine street legal.
Production is strictly limited to 275 units, with most assembled at a dedicated facility in Coventry, UK, in partnership with engineering firm Multimatic. Of the cars recalled, 183 are located in Germany, where owners are being urged to contact Mercedes-AMG immediately to arrange the inspection.
Fire Reports Raise Concerns
Although the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) states there have been no confirmed fires linked to this specific defect, two separate AMG One fires have been reported. The first occurred in May 2023, when an AMG One was destroyed in a trailer fire in the UK. More recently, another vehicle caught fire roadside in Germany. Neither incident has officially been tied to the missing pin lock issue.
Owners of the Mercedes-AMG One, especially those with cars built between December 2022 and May 2025, are advised to schedule an inspection as soon as possible to eliminate any risk.
